Week 1 – Setting Your Goal

Guess what my goal is?

I am training for the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on November 8, two days before my book release!

This will be my third half marathon. My first two events I ran with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training and they were amazing experiences! But I must confess, after the second event I said I would NEVER EVER run a half marathon again because I did not have the same experience as the first event. I had slacked off in my training and as a result I was pretty miserable running 13.1 miles the second time around.

It’s very import that we get focused and serious about our goals here. If you are here on my blog, I really want you to make a commitment for the next 12 weeks. I don’t want you to commit half way, but fully commit. Let’s do this together!

In the comments below I want you to write out your SMART Goal. For example here’s mine!

Specific: Run 13.1 miles

Measurable: Nov. 8, 2015 (2 days before Worthy of a Miracle book release!!!)

Attainable: Planned wisely (Meeting with a running coach and allowed adequate time to train.)

Realistic: Yes, I am willing and able.

Timely: 12 week time frame

SMART-Goals

Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN What Happens When Women Say Yes To God devotional by Lysa TerKeurst. Winner announced next Tuesday! I’m so excited to have you running alongside me the next 12 weeks as we accomplish our goals together.

How I Used Being Embarrassed To My Advantage

embarrass

Hot flushed face. Sweaty palms. Shaky voice. Embarrassment.

We’ve all been there. Whether we did it to ourselves or someone else is to blame.

Isn’t it the worst?

We do everything in our power to avoid feeling embarrassed. Whether it’s making sure we are not the only one walking into the party alone or giving excuses as to why Susie Q is dressed the way she is.

Just thinking about being embarrassed for half a second makes my stomach churn.

But what if we could use embarrassment to our advantage?

When I was training for my very first half-marathon with Team In Training, I learned how embarrassment could actually become my friend instead of that dreadful nemesis.

I was committed to raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphomas Society so I asked for donations from all my friends and family to support me.

After sending out a ton of letters I realized there was no turning back. I was stuck! I had to follow through with my commitment; otherwise I was going to be completely embarrassed.

No matter how tuff training got I refused to give up. People had donated money to support me. My hands were tied. There was no way, no how I was going to be a quitter. I wanted to honor my word and of course their money!

By putting myself out there, to the point of embarrassment actually worked to my advantage. It kept me motivated. It kept me accountable. And procrastination was nowhere on the radar.

From this experience I learned a simple tool that keeps me accountable today.

Social accountability.

When I really want to achieve a goal, I will put myself out there every time. I will announce it to the world, even though it makes me want to throw up at first!

But hey, it works! It keeps me accountable.

Social accountability pushes me out of my comfort zone and soaring into great results.

I want to challenge you today friend.

What goal are you ready to achieve? You know the one that makes you a little queasy when you think about it.

I’d love to hear about it. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God.

When You’re Bit by the Insecurity Bug

fear

Hey sweet friend!

If you’ve been connected with me for a while you know that I wrote a book last year. During this process of excruciating vulnerability I’ve had the emotional ride of my life!

High … low … high … low … high … looooooow …

This year as I’m going through the next phase of publishing I’m experiencing yet again many mixed emotions.

Putting yourself “out there” is such a scary place to be. It’s so easy to get caught up in what other people think about you. Who will “approve” of you and who will “reject” you? Those kinds of thoughts spinning in your mind too long could make a person go crazy.

Ugh!!!

And if you don’t watch out you might be taken by surprise when one day you realize you’re eaten up with insecurities that keep you trapped in fear and paralyzed in the “not good enoughs”.

Just the other day I was having a come to Jesus meeting with myself and said, “Linda, you’ve been bit by the insecurity bug once again! What are you going to do about it? Eat a candy bar or let yourself feel it and have a cry on your hubby’s shoulder?”

Well, I actually did both. {Just being honest here.}

The candy bar didn’t really do a thing for me except give me a sugar rush, headache and kept me up half the night. But crying on my husband’s shoulder actually worked for me.

I wept like a baby. Snot everywhere!

And as my husband dried my tears with his sweet words of encouragement I found strength to move forward and get over myself.

Now, that was just for the moment. That darn insecurity bug is buzzing around me all the time. It’s everywhere. Online, in relationships, in church, in ministry, in parenting, in my physical health, in finances … you name it, that stinker might pop up anywhere.

Instead of running away from my fears, I’ve decided to lean into them. I’ve been bit one too many times by insecurity and I refuse to let it take me down.

I will keep fighting. I will keep getting back up.

Why?

Because when I am weak HE IS STRONG! His grace is sufficient for me. His power is made perfect in my weakness. (2 Cor 12:9-10) He has armed me with strength for battle. He has made my opponents (the enemy) bow at my feet. (Psalm 18:39)

I simply choose to keep on fighting. Today I choose to remain fearless. Will you join me?

Coming in February I will begin a short blog series on How to Squash the Insecurity Bug. I would to love have you here. Please invite your friends to sign up for my blog and share this on your social media sites. Click here to subscribe to my blog.

How to be a Winner

howtobeawinner Everyone is trying to win at this game called life. Whether it’s trying to lose a few pounds, becoming a better friend, finding a new career or just getting the front row parking spot at the grocery. We are always trying to win.

I find myself every single day trying to win at something. And then reality sets in. I’m fighting for the unattainable. I’m fighting for perfection.

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter if I’m just the right shape or how many friends I have on Facebook. What really matters is if I like me. And when I’m in a constant battle to win, the opposite becomes true and I end up hating me.

A few weeks ago, when I started feeling really down on myself and listening to those negative thoughts I did something completely different than I’ve ever done.

I quit! Yes. I quit!

With a tear-stained heart, I said I quit!

I VOW TO QUIT TRYING TO BE THE PERFECT:  writer, speaker, coach, wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, …….

And for the first time in a long time I WON! After quitting, I felt exhilarated. I was unstoppable. I was confident. I was able to believe the complete TRUTH. I was able to live out Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Quitting gave me a fresh vision for my life.

I no longer have to strive for perfection.

I want to challenge you to QUIT today. In the comments section tell me what you are quitting and your name will be entered to WIN What Happens When Women Say Yes To God Devotional by Lysa TerKeurst. yestogoddevot   To receive my blog, click here to subscribe and get your free gift today!
