A Sweet Place of Breakthrough

deskartjournal

If I could reach through the computer screen I’d give you the biggest (((HUG))) and thank you for joining me on this inspiring journey of practicing COURAGE this month!

As I was sitting at my desk thinking about writing today’s post, I looked down and noticed my art journal I’ve been using for an online class I’m taking with Brene Brown. (Side note: I love her and all of her books!)

I couldn’t help myself, I have to share with you one of the coolest things I think I’ve done in quite some time.

One afternoon a few weeks ago, I was a little fidgety and I had this sense that I really wanted to do something fun, like create, paint or draw…

Because I’m not artistic in that way, like my daughter, I usually ignore those fleeting thoughts and do something “more productive”. You know like cleaning out my kitchen cabinets, folding laundry, vacuuming the floors, grocery shopping. I mean who has time to sit around and create a useless piece of art when so many things have to get done?

However, because of all this COURAGE talk we’ve had going on this month, I took a deep breath and thought to myself, Linda, this is an opportunity to practice courage. Are you going to do it?

And then I felt that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach.

A siren went off in my head.

COURAGE ALERT! COURAGE ALERT! MUST ACT NOW!!

In that moment, I made an intentional decision and pushed through the resistance. I was brave. I asked my husband and daughter if they would like to join me in the dining room to create something. I had no agenda; I just wanted to use my watercolors, markers and journal.

And to my surprise, they both curiously looked at me and nodded their heads yes!

The three of us gathered around the table and spent about half an hour or so randomly creating things. I loved being with my family doing something creative. The only time we ever do this kind of thing is on a half-to basis, like school projects.

You want to know the absolute best part about this?

The way it made me feel!

I felt HAPPY…. ALIVE…FULL…. PEACEFUL…. CONTENT.

Looking back, I believe that was the day COURAGE led me to a sweet place of breakthrough.

  1. Linda,
I have a bad habit of not listening to the voice urging me to drop what I am doing and listen to what the Spirit is calling me to do. But, when I do I am always amazed by what is waiting for me! I will be listening for that voice today–thank you for the reminder that our breakthroughs can come when we are listening to that still, small voice of God.

    • I’m with you Sandi when it comes to ignoring the small voice. I learned so much for the one small act of obedience that I’m now looking for it! Thanks for commenting.

  2. Thanks, Linda, for the inspiration on courage. I’m working on my courage to write and speak for women’s ministry!

    • Kim, I pray the Lord will continue to cover you with confidence and reassurance that your unique gifts are exactly what the world needs. I believe in you!!! You can do it my friend!

  3. Good Morning, Linda. Actually, both my husband and I are choosing courage, as we have decided to move from our current home and purchase another home. This is a big step for us. We prayed and asked God to show us just the right home , the one He had already chosen for us. After seeing numerous homes, we chose one that is smaller than we have now, but, will be much more economical for us. And the best part is that we will be closer to some of our family. We knew that God would show us the way. But, we still needed courage to realize that this new home is the one God has chosen for us. We are looking forward to making new friends and show God’s love with our neighbors. 🙂

    • This sounds so exciting Melissa!! Congratulations on your bold step of courage. I cannot wait to hear about all your future blessings. ((hugs))

  4. I have liked your choice word, courage this month to. You can find out a lot about someone’s in need of and be able to help them do their best.

  5. I’ve been trying create a closer relationship with God by focusing more on Him throughout the day. That is what my “soul has been longing for”. For me, I found I have to intentionally stop what I am doing and focus my thoughts on God. It has taken courage to step outside my comfort zone and do this. It’s not easy to do during a busy day at work, but I am working on it.

  6. I stepped out of my box to help get our church Hope Center Kitchen reorganized. Little did I know it is a bigger task then I knew. Now I know why no one took it on. God has blessed me in getting to know some great people and a donate electric stove. This has brought me joy to serve God on the days my body is up to working.

  7. Hi Linda , I a so thankful for these posts and blogs on courage in just this month that I have been joining in on courage , I have had much oppourtunity to practice courage , and one was for one of the guys at work having a bad day and wanted to give up on his job and in his broken English because he is from Mexico he told me , and I had a chance to encourage him not to give up to stay strong , I had a chance to speak life giving words to build him up , and today I had a chance to practice courage to stand strong in showing live to someone that’s been hard to love to treat her with grace and to pray for her before I went to work , thank you for your post and blog . I pray for us and hope courage will continue and I will still see courage popping up everywhere .
Cannot begin to tell you how much these have meant to me .
    Thank you
    Carol

  8. thank you for a well written blog, I love your statement “When we choose courage, we choose what our souls long for, to be deeply connected with our true selves”.

  9. Thank you, Linda for all the words on courage. They were sweet words of encouragement. I’m sorry I missed the call Wednesday at noon. I was sick with a headache and nausea all day. If there’s any information that would be easy to get to me without any trouble I would enjoy learning more. If not, that’s no problem. I plan on keeping up with you here. Thanks again!

  10. thank you ,I have missed a few days trying to catch up ,I love this blog and study .. my craving is a closer walk with God to do as he wants me ,to be quite in his word ,to take time for him
